IBS Report #: 892

Sighting Type: 1
Latitude: +055˚ 37' N
Longitude: 132˚ 54' W
Day:
Month:
Year: 1900
Time:
Elevation:
Data Source: TR86
Credibility: 1
Locality: PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND
Researcher: ROB ALLEY
Witness: NATIVE
Sighting Type: 1
Summary: BF SHOT AND KILLED, BURIED ON BEACH
Sighting Text:
AK PRINCE OF WALES 1900 TR#86 * Rob Alley investigation, kokanee@ptialaska.net Native folklore in the Pacific Northwest is replete with varied references to Sasquatch like creatures and yet there are numerous references to both a general "live and let live" philosophy as well as to alleged shootings and sometimes alleged killings. One such turn of the century account I am attempting to unravel is of one native on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, who happened to exit the forest above a beach to be confronted with the sight of one of these creatures standing at point blank range. The man is supposed to have fired away, killing the creature. Three other men of his group responded to the noise and, the tale goes, found the creature lying there "so horrible that they buried him on the beach." What is not said is whether the burial took place out of fear of reprisal by the "land otter people," out of remorse for killing a creature so superficially manlike, out of fear of repercussions by the non-natives, or even the non-native authorities. Should such stories even occasionally have some basis in fact it suggests at least one thing. Firstly, that someone who is generally and on principle a tolerant and gentle soul might easily under any number of circumstances react in a decisive and forceful way. This especially if he has a personal history of firearm use. So the non-hunter might in the thick of things appear to be a hunter. Conversely, the world is full of a good number of long-time hunters, who for any number of personal reasons, have long since given up the ability to pull the trigger on any species of game. Rob Alley
