IBS Report #: 1082
Location: Prince of Wales-Outer Ketchikan county, AK. UNITED STATES
Sighting Type: 2
Latitude: +055˚ 37' N
Longitude: 130˚ 07' W
Day:
Month: JAN
Year: 2000
Time: MIDDAY
Elevation: 10
Data Source: TR94
Credibility: 3
Locality: PORTLAND CANAL, OPPOSITE PEARSE ISLAND
Researcher: ROB ALLEY
Witness: STEVE S. AND JEFF J.
Sighting Type: 2
Summary: TRACKS SEEN FROM BOAT IN SNOW
Sighting Text:
AK 2000 TR94 * kokanee@ptialaska.net (Rob Alley) Steve S. and Jeff J., commercial Alaskan fishermen reported to me that on Jan.7, ‘00 they were proceeding northward along the American side of Portland Canal, opposite the northern tip of Pearse Island. Around midday, passing very close to shore between Reef Island and the Alaska mainland at high tide, they noticed large apparently biped tracks in the snow which lay about four feet deep between the tree-line and saltwater. There were about eight or nine tracks which did not resemble moose tracks in a straight line from the trees down to the water. The tracks were very neat and whatever made them, according to Steve who is also a guide and accomplished hunter, was not a moose. The terrain is steep and densely forested with hemlock, blue spruce and cedar. The shoreline is alternately rocky(abalone in littoral zone) and sandy beach (shellfish). No odor detected, nothing heard.

Summary: BF SEEN BY CHILDREN, BRANCHES SHAKEN
Sighting Text:
* Rob Alley, Ketchickan, Alaska. kokanee@ptialaska.net Hi Ray, A brief note from Al Jackson in Klawock, Prince of Wales Island who recently interviewed a bulk fuel driver there. The man told Al that around the end of August he had been in Hydaburg, at the end of the road system on Prince of Wales, and spoke with a number of parents there who felt their kids had seen a “tall, dark hairy creature near the water tank just on the outskirts of Hydaburg. Apparently the children had all been playing near the salmonberry bushes there one day when they had seen a large, hair-covered manlike creature walking along the edge of the trees. It was reported that the creature walked away from them and stopped in some saplings, shaking the branches and screamed at them. The five kids all went home, told their parents what they had seen, and, according to the driver, the parents felt the children were truthful, agreeing it was not a bear. There had been a good local berry crop and good sockeye runs. Everyone there knows really well what black bears look like, and no-one had suggested it had been a bear."
