A Strange Animal in Florida
(Baltimore News)
A Strange animal Half man and half fish, and covered with a long growth of coarse black hair, has been seen several times recently in Big Charley Popka River, Manatee County, Florida. The head and upper portion of the body resemble a man-short, stumpy arms, with webbed feet, taking the place of feet, while the lower portion is just like a tail of any fish. The monstrosity is about four feet in length, and when sporting about in the water utters coarse, guttural sounds, a cross between the barking of a dog and bellowing of a bull. Several attempts to capture and shoot the animal have proved futile.
